Blanche Malankowski-Smith worked as a Title I Math Resource Teacher for many years in Richmond. As a classroom teacher, she has taught grades 2-8. In the early ‘90’s, she became the Elementary Math Specialist in her district, now renamed West Contra Costa Unified School District. It was in this position, working with the professional development model Math Matters that she influenced hundreds of teachers. Within three years, under her leadership, the number of Title I schools involved in the program more than tripled. In addition, standardized math test scores of the students in the program, doubled during this time and are nationally noted in the WestEd Math Matters brochure. Also during her six year tenure as Math Specialist, she developed a district-wide professional development model called MAST (Math Achievement Support Team) in which all 40 elementary schools were represented. Blance has presented in many school districts and for the Northern California Math Conferences in Palm Springs and Asilomar.
