Heidi Berkey
teaches fourth grade in a collaborative team-teaching inclusion classroom. Heidi’s passion for learning and literacy drives her focus on professional development in all aspects of balanced literacy. Ms. Berkey has advanced her studies in literacy through the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project at Columbia University.
As a teacher leader in a NJ School District and out of the district, Heidi has designed and co-facilitated staff development workshops in understanding, implementing, and improving Reading and Writing Workshop in the classroom. Workshop participant feedback consistently indicates Heidi’s workshops as engaging, interactive, and providing practical ideas, techniques, and resources that can be applied to the classroom immediately.
In collaboration with other teacher leaders, Heidi has developed Units of Study for both Reading and Writing Workshop that include assessments to support and map the growth of readers and writers and strategies for differentiation to meet the needs of individual students. Heidi shares best practices that have been successful in the classroom to build reading and writing communities in schools.
