John Fanning has been a middle and high school teacher and literacy coach in Region 9 of the New York City public school system for over 9 years. He has presented at local workshops and was a featured educator at the 2005 national CES conference. John has presented on topics such as “How to get struggling middle school and high school students engaged” and “Students as worker, teacher as coach”. While teaching John has successfully used workshop model, Accountable Talk, differentiated instruction, backwards planning, incorporating Habits of Mind and teaching history through art.
As a literacy coach, John has co-facilitated “Foundations of Literacy in the High School English Classroom” an introductory course for teaching reading and writing for English teachers new to Region 9 schools. He has also written Social Studies curriculum for the New York City Department of Education with the emphasis on literacy in the history class.
