Making a Movie in Your Mind that enables you to live out the story alongside a character can engage
students to be engrossed in their stories. Teaching students how to visualize through multiple strategies
and text rich with character development should be a priority in all classrooms. Growing theories and
conclusions about characters in their complex worlds allows students to utilize higher order thinking skills.
In this workshop, Monique will provide strategies for mini-lessons that can be taught in strands to build a
repertoire for your students to achieve this kind of thinking. She will model lessons with teachers that can
be used in their classrooms. Then she will instruct teachers in how to transfer these same powerful
comprehension skills to non-fiction reading. Teachers will learn techniques and strategies to enable their
students to engage with and grow ideas about the topics they are studying beyond the literal text.
Topics that will be addressed:
- Explicit reading skill instruction for
Visualizing, and Inferring in fiction and
nonfiction texts
- Conversational Moves that foster
comprehension and develop higher
order thinking skills
- Mini-Lessons and Strategies for moving
students to the next reading level
