| Strategies for Struggling Math Students |
| Grades: 4-8 |
Presented
by: Gayle Palka
Gayle is
well known for her ability to craft specialized
workshops specifically suited to meet the individual
needs of schools that she works with, ensuring that
both hands-on and math literacy activities will
always be included!
|
This workshop incorporates a variety of research-based information about why students struggle in math.
It allows participants to work collaboratively and practice a number of hands-on strategies to take back
to their classrooms and immediately apply to their teaching.
Upon completion of this hands-on math
workshop, participants will be able to:
- Apply research-based instructional strategies to
increase mathematical literacy for all learners.
- Recognize the importance of including the five
NCTM Process Standards (Problem Solving,
Reasoning and Proof, Communication, Connections,
and Representation) when teaching in the five
Content Standards (Number Sense, Algebra,
Geometry, Measurement, and Statistics and
Probability).
- Identify primary learning styles of students to
create differentiated instructional opportunities for
all learners.
- Explain how building vocabulary knowledge is
necessary for learners to be able to communicate
precisely in mathematics.
- Create higher-level thinking questions to promote
concept attainment and formation.
- Implement problem-solving strategies that help
students with organizing information and
developing mathematically sound concepts and
processes.
