Merrie Fischer has worked as a literacy consultant in the New York City Public Schools for New York University Metropolitan Center for Urban Education in grades K-5. In addition she has been an adjunct teacher working with small groups of children in guided and independent reading and writing. Most recently she served as a literacy coach on Long Island in grades 1-3. In these capacities she worked with classroom teachers and students, modeling lessons in reading and writing workshops and ran professional development groups. She completed training as a literacy coach at Lesley University with Irene Fountas.

Her experience is diverse, having taught grades K-5 in Long Island, NY Public Schools for over 30 years where she was instrumental in innovating many programs. She was part on an American and English team of teachers in a graduate program at CW Post College where she instructed American teachers in how to integrate curriculum across content areas. Merrie brought these programs back to her classroom in Long Island, NY, which served as a model for visiting teachers.
