Molly Ness earned her doctorate in Literacy Education at the University of Virginia, where she focused on content-area literacy and comprehension. She also holds a Masters in English Education. Her areas of expertise include adolescent literacy, reading and writing across the curriculum, content-area literacy, reading comprehension, and diagnosis and assessment of struggling readers. A former Teach for America corps member, Molly taught 6th grade Social Studies and Language Arts. She is the author of Lessons to Learn: Voices from the Front Lines of Teach for America. Molly has supervised student teachers, trained teachers pursuing reading certification, spearheaded the creation of high school literacy labs, and led professional development sessions for secondary teachers. Currently, she is an adjunct instructor at the University of Virginia and James Madison University. Her research has focused on remediation of struggling high school readers and has been presented at the National Reading Conference. The courses she designed for both preservice and inservice teachers have been adopted by the University of Virginia and North Georgia University. Her current research examines how secondary content-area teachers integrate reading comprehension strategies into their classrooms. In training inservice teachers, Molly’s work has been praised as practical, hands-on, and readily applicable.
