Workshop
Description
Differentiated Instruction
Today's
students come in all different sizes, races, levels
of functioning intelligences and learning styles. The
challenges of meeting the needs of elementary students
with or without pre-school experiences or enriched home
environments; or, middle and high school students who
are experiencing developmental changes into adulthood
and accompanying sensitivities are legendary. Enter
the classroom teacher who must know as much about tactful
ways to reach his or her students as he or she knows
about the subject matter being taught. What learning
styles will work best with this group of students? How
shall they be grouped for instruction by ability levels
without hurting the feelings of challenged learners
who can even read the text book. How do we prepare students
to pass the mandated state assessments so 'No Child
Will Be Left Behind?' This workshop will address adaptations
in content, instructional strategies and test preparations
that have proven to be effective.
GETTING STARTED WITH PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITIES
In Professional Learning Communities, educators collaboratively analyze
student progress toward the achievement of core-content standards and
prepare instructional strategies and curriculum that promotes improvement in
areas of need. This paradigm shift is enormous! How are teachers suddenly
going to work together toward commonly shared visions after years of
independence?
This workshop addresses this paradigm shift in simplified steps beginning
with fear of the unknown and the development of shared visions through the
conditions necessary for an effective professional learning community, which
is continually renewing itself. Workshop participants are encouraged to come
with peers who will become members of their Professional Learning
Communities.
Objectives
- Workshop participants will learn how to mitigate the fear of change.
- Workshop participants will learn how to establish common visions and
goals.
- Workshop participants will learn the procedures of effective group work.
- Workshop participants will learn the social amenities of effective group
work.
