Ria Wickstandt is a private consultant that specializes in creating adult learning communities, embedded literacy coaching and staff development. She began her teaching career in Anchorage, Alaska where she taught grades K-6 for over twenty years.
Ms. Wickstandt also filled the role as a district level coach in the areas of both math and literacy for the last four years of her career both in Alaska and California before becoming an independent consultant. Ms. Wickstandt now consults and provides staff development in literacy instruction, and instructional leadership in school districts in California and Washington. Her work in schools is multi-layered: she works on a district level providing staff development to grow not only teachers’ and coaches’ literacy content knowledge, but the leadership’s as well; she works with site leadership teams to research and analyze student performance in order to plan and implement effective professional development; she works in a studio residency capacity in many districts, providing job embedded staff development, and coaches alongside the staff developers to improve teacher practice and student achievement.
