Shira Katz has worked in District Two/Region Nine in Manhattan as a teacher, mentor teacher, Social Studies staff developer and Literacy Coach for ten years. She taught Humanities to middle and high school students with a broad range of abilities at a New Visions school. She has worked with both struggling and high skilled students. As a teacher and coach, she serves as the chair of the Humanities Department at a NYC School, is a program graduate of the Critical Friends Facilitator's Institute, and serves as a Teacher Leader for the New York city office of Facing History and Ourselves.
In her work as a Staff Developer and Literacy Coach, Shira has provided support and resources to numerous teachers. Shira has presented workshops on the following topics: Six Trait Writing, Accountable Talk; Balanced Literacy; Conferring Strategies; New Teacher Skills; Backward Planning; Literacy Strategies in the Content Areas; Rigor and Pacing in the Classroom; Using Student Work as a Planning Guide; Utilizing the Workshop Model and Strategies for Reading Difficult Texts.
