    Workshops for Teachers

  • How to Teach “Strong Nouns and Verbs,” “Using the Senses,” and “Showing vs. Telling”
Simple techniques may significantly improve the impact of student writing. Using materials I’ve developed, I’ll review with teachers how to conduct my small-group writing workshops. Subjects include: using strong nouns and verbs, writing with all five senses, and showing—rather than telling—in stories. Handouts included, with permission to use them in the classroom. May be useful for teachers of third grade through high school.

  • What Happens Next: Finding the Shape of Your Story
One of the most frequent questions asked me by students who are writing seriously goes like this: “I started writing this story, and I loved it. And everything was going great, just moving right along. And all of a sudden it just stopped. And I don’t have a clue what to do next!” In this workshop I’ll share with teachers the method I use to figure out what happens next: how to develop the story’s plot. Handout included, with permission to use it in the classroom. May be useful to teachers of middle school through high school.

  • The Vocabulary of Emotion: Ways of Presenting Emotion in Fiction
In this workshop, I’ll explore with teachers ways to express and evoke emotion in fiction, including metaphor, syntax, hard action, objective correlative, and more. The goal is for writers to increase our vocabulary, as it were, so that we may become more supple and resourceful when expression emotion. Handout included, with permission to use it in the classroom. May be useful to teachers of middle school through high school.
