Suzanne
Ryan has made literature the backbone of her Pre-K through third grade classrooms for thirty years. Integrated instruction and connecting music and literacy are her secrets for creating a rich, balanced program where all
children thrive. She has traveled extensively throughout the country and as far as Bermuda listening and sharing with educators in an attempt to better understand their needs. Teachers as well as students are inspired and rejuvenated by the interactive lessons Suzanne plans.
Suzanne is a K-12 certified reading teacher with a recent degree in educational administration. She is co-founder of the T.A.B.L.E. conference in Vermont designed as a retreat for classroom teachers to connect one-one with authors and musicians. Suzanne has been involved in an ongoing collaborative university research project on early writing, which included gathering data from parents, students and teammates. She is now ready to share the results in a second book, “Write From the Start” and is collaborating on a book with children’s musician and co-presenter Rick Charette. Suzanne’s is the co-author of "Storycases, Book Surprises to Take Home" which was published in 1996.
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS
USING MUSIC AND MOVEMENT TO TEACH BASIC SKILLS
Music and movement engage the brain for optimum learning results by incorporating the three R’s: rhyme, rhythm and repetition. Children can learn and have FUN at the same time. Watch literacy come alive through movement activities that include easy, fun songs, drama and literature. Use as a springboard to achieve richer results in student writing. Create a risk free learning environment that will stimulate early literacy and build a foundation for reading that works for all children regardless of developmental age. You will leave this session refreshed with ideas for meeting the standards including phonemic awareness, syllabication, and writing activities you can use tomorrow.
STORYCASES, LITERATURE TO GO
During this unique program you will be provided with a multitude of ideas for creating child-oriented storycases. A storycase contains a children’s book or books with accompanying props stored in a container that is carried home from school and shared with family and peers. Examples will be shown and classroom uses demonstrated. Appropriate for K-2 teachers, librarians, parents, Title I, speech, special ed., reading and math specialists. Can be expanded for lower or higher age groups. Plan on an interactive experience where you will learn to do a little singing and signing.
MATH, MUSIC, MOVEMENT AND MANIPULATIVES
Children can learn and have FUN at the same time. Watch math come alive through movement activities that include easy fun songs, patterning activities, graphing, sorting, counting, art and literature. Create a risk-free learning environment that will stimulate early learning and build a foundation for positive future math experiences that work for all children regardless of developmental age. You will leave this session refreshed with ideas for meeting the standards including numeral and shape recognition, measurement, color activities and parent involvement.
CELEBRATING LANGUAGE THROUGH MUSIC
Rick Charette and Suzanne Ryan
Music plays an important part in a child’s learning. Discover ways for using music to motivate children through singing and movement. Start your school year off using Charette songs for yearlong community building and theme development. Practical classroom applications will be abundant as Rick Charette and Suzanne Ryan collaborate to help you. Participants will be actively involved, so expect to have FUN. Take the essence of whatever you are teaching and put it into a rhythmic format that can be sung or chanted. Find out how to help children create and adapt music to incorporate their own ideas and to reinforce what they are learning. Many samples of student work will be presented.
THE CRITICAL R’S OF EARLY LITERACY
Classroom management and establishing routines and rituals are critical to achieving success in any early literacy program. Combine these rules with rhythms, rhymes, raps, repetition and rewrites to build a community of learners who master the basics in a joyful environment. Learn the importance of review and reflection. This workshop is designed to be interactive and incorporates responsive classroom techniques.
WRITE FROM THE START
Kids are born writers and have a story to tell from the moment they begin to talk. Practice techniques for capturing these stories and strengthening the reading/writing connection. Participants will learn how to teach respectful listening and combine with noticing, wondering, thinking, questioning and commenting techniques to create children who choose to write.
