Wilma Kozai
is an educator and consultant who works with teachers, coaches,
and administrators K-12 nationally. She started her career teaching math, 6
- 9, for 8 years. As a principal, she continued to provide support to her
math teachers and as an assistant superintendent, along side of Marilyn
Burns' consultants, provided professional development in math for principals
and math coaches.
For the last five years,Wilma has provided professional development and
coaching in math for teachers and coaches, grades K - 10, across the nation.
Her professional development has had direct impact on the instructional
practices of teachers and student achievement.
Wilma believes that teachers need multiple opportunities to engage in the
math work themselves, see demonstration lessons, and be supported through
side by side coaching; all of which she provides.
Wilma provides professional development and coaching on:
- What is mathematical understanding?
- How to balance conceptual understanding and skill development
- What is mathematical discourse and how do you press students to reason and
justify as they build understanding?
- How to create high-cognitive demanding tasks
- How to assess student learning, misconceptions, and use both to inform
- Instruction
- Development of curricular maps and units
- How to use literature to make connections in math
- How to coach teachers
She is knowledgeable about CA and other state math standards as well as NCTM
focal points and standards. She has worked with various curricula such as;
CPM, Everyday Math,Harcourt Mathematics, Prentice Hall Pre-Algebra, McDougal
Little Algebra and Kathy Richardson's Critical Learning Phases for K-3.
