Constance Foland is an educational consultant specializing in literacy instruction. She has taught Reading Recovery and English as a Second Language in several New York City schools, including Manhattan New School, under the direction of Shelley Harwayne. She was also a reading specialist in New York. Constance conducts workshops and institutes and provides on-site coaching for teachers across the country. She is the author of A Song for Jeffrey and Flying High, Pogo! two middle grade novels published by American Girl Publications. She is currently working on a book about teaching writing

Presented by: Sophie Trecker
Sophie Trecker taught for 6 years at PS 116 in Manhattan. Sophie has experience developing and implementing balanced literacy and the workshop model of reading and writing. She has mentored teachers who are new to this model as well as presented workshops to them. Sophie has experience working with a variety of children including ELL students and students with special needs; she co-taught in an inclusion kindergarten classroom. Sophie has also worked as a supervisor in the Curriculum and Teaching department at Teachers College; she worked with student teachers to develop and implement curriculum in various grade levels.

Literacy consultants Sophie Trecker and Constance Foland will help K-5 teachers explore the Common Core Standards through interactive read aloud, shared reading, and independent reading. Constance and Sophie will share techniques for tailoring units of study in the reading workshop to meet the new demands of the Core Standards. Teachers will also learn how to model and scaffold close reading and comprehension strategies during shared reading activities.

In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to

  • Use read aloud time to improve comprehension and vocabulary
  • Use accountable talk to raise the level of student conversations
  • Create minilesson clusters using Core Standards
  • Plan shared reading lessons based on Core Standards
Registration Information:
Fee: $125 per person. Register 4 weeks in advance and pay only $100 per person. No confirmation will be sent. Your cancelled check or credit card statement will be your receipt.

Cancellations one week prior to the workshop date, will be refunded less a $15.00 cancellation fee. Later cancellations will receive credit towards an upcoming workshop. Substitutions are allowed at any time.

If workshop is cancelled due to inclement weather, the event will be rescheduled. Refunds will not be granted, but we will issue credit towards a future workshop.

Payment is due prior to the workshop. Fee includes seminar registration, a personalized certificate of attendance, refreshments, and a resource handbook. On-site registration is available, if space allows. Please call ahead to check on space availability.
