Monday Dec. 7
Using Read Aloud and Accountable Talk to Build Higher Comprehension Skills in Fiction and Nonfiction

Presented by: Kathy Collins
“Kathy provides you with the companionship, practical help, and the inspiration you need in order to incorporate reading clubs into your teaching. She will help you see that you need not make a choice between teaching for skills and teaching for engagement as your students both learn to read and learn to love reading.”
-Lucy Calkins

On this day, Kathy Collins will help teachers re-envision a read aloud time that is warm and child-centered yet rife with opportunities to support children's language development and reading comprehension. Kathy will share practical suggestions for helping children build their conversation skills in general, and their book talk skills in particular. She will demonstrate a variety of methods for instruction that teachers can embed into their read aloud times so that children can have the best of both worlds - they can experience the pleasure of listening to a well-read story or nonfiction text while also learning strategies that will help them grow as readers, thinkers, and talkers.
Kathy will also offer step-by-step plans for helping young children develop conversational competence and confidence. She'll show how we can create a culture of comprehension in our classrooms as well as the benefits of doing so.
