Barbara Sklar

Prior to her retirement, Barbara Sklar spent the last twenty years as a Reading Specialist in a Long Island School District, working with middle school students. As the English Coordinator of her building, she acted as a resource for the teachers, often modeling lessons and providing assistance regarding assessment, content area reading and balanced literacy. She developed a pull-out/ push in reading program and taught a class based on Orton-Gillingham principles. She has developed curriculum based on Backwards Design and Enduring Understandings. Barbara has facilitated staff development with small groups and large groups . She has given presentations at Nassau Reading Council Conference, and New York State Reading Association Conference. One of her joys was traveling to Guatemala four times to work with Guatemalan teachers. She also worked for two and a half years with teachers in grades six, seven, and eight, implementing a Balanced Literacy Program in the Long Island schools. Barbara was President of Nassau Reading Council and, in addition, was twice Co-Chair of the Annual Conference. As Co- Chair of Young Authors’ Contest, she promoted a county wide contest for students in grades K-12 in all schools in Nassau County that celebrated children and their writing.
She received the New York State English Council Educator of Excellence award in 2005.
