Barbara Soares
has been a fourth grade teacher in a NJ School District for six years. Throughout her teaching, Barbara's love of teaching and learning led to her pursuit of a Masters in Educational Leadership. Additionally, Ms. Soares continues to advance her knowledge and understanding of effective literacy instruction at Teacher's College Reading and Writing Project by attending summer institutes, coaching institutes, and Saturday reunions. As a teacher leader in her own district, as well as other districts, Ms. Soares has dedicated her career to developing lifelong readers and writers by providing on-going professional development for teachers, collaborating to author balanced literacy curriculum, and improving literacy instruction. Specifically, Barbara has constructed and facilitated workshops in all areas of balanced literacy including: Reading Workshop, Writing Workshop, Interactive Read Aloud, Shared Reading, implementing formative/summative assessments, and developing units of study in reading and writing. Ms. Soares believes that professional development workshops should be collaborative, hands-on, meet the needs of teachers, and demonstrate strategies that can be utilized immediately in the classroom. By working in partnership with teachers, Barbara hopes to impact students' reading and writing lives.
