Katie Cunningham

Katie Cunningham teaches courses at Manhattanville College in the department
of Literacy Education and is a private literacy consultant. She completed
her doctorate degree from Teachers College, Columbia University in 2009
where she focused on literacy curriculum and instruction. She has also been
a literacy specialist and classroom teacher of grades 2-5 for the past ten
years. In addition, Katie has a great deal of knowledge and experience with
various word study programs including Words Their Way and Preventing
Academic Failure. Katie has presented at national conferences on reading
comprehension strategies, balanced literacy, critical literacy, and reaching
boys as readers and writers. She has also worked with smaller groups of
teachers on how to design curriculum to meet students' and teachers' needs.
During school visits, Katie presents demonstrative lessons, assists in unit
planning and coaches teachers on the important outcomes they have for their
students as readers and writers. Drawing from current research and her own
classroom experiences, Katie is an engaging presenter full of practical
strategies for any elementary classroom.
