Melissa Wigdor is a former teacher at the Manhattan New School, a public school in New York City. Her classroom work is featured in two professional books on reading and writing. In Significant Studies for Second Grade (Heinemann), she contributes her point of view and experiences as a teacher by writing the section “Through Melissa’s Eyes” at the end of each chapter. Melissa has conducted K-2 literacy workshops around the country, working with both small and large groups of teachers. Her workshops provide an insight into her own classroom, which serves as a model for creating a classroom community that supports reading and writing workshops. Through clear examples and practical modeling, teachers feel empowered to implement her structures and strategies into their own classrooms.
