Best Practices for Teaching Nonfiction Reading in the Readers' Workshop (Aligned with the Common Core Standards)
Grades: 3-8
Presented by: Sarah Buxton
Sarah Buxton first started her career as a middle school teacher in Brooklyn where she taught Reader’s and Writer’s workshops to grades 6 and 7. Co-author of Workshop that Work!, Sarah became a lead teacher and then Literacy Coach at a Collaborative Team Teaching school. This opportunity afforded her the chance to put theory into practice, continue learning with Mary Ehrenworth from Teacher’s College and develop a strong eye for differentiation for all learners. Today, Sarah works independently as a consultant in schools in the Bronx, New Jersey, and Long Island and has traveled to Texas and Tennessee to share best practices with colleagues. Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop, Guided reading, subject area literacy and the New Common Core Curriculum are just some of her areas of expertise.

Presented by: Allyson Nusser
Allyson Nusser is an independent literacy consultant specializing in teaching reading and writing workshop at the upper elementary and middle school level. Prior to consulting, Allyson served as a teacher and literacy coach. Her classroom was a "model" classroom for citywide inter-visitations focusing on demonstrating balanced literacy to upper elementary and middle school educators In addition, Allyson provided staff development focusing on establishing routines for launching reading and writing workshop, planning mini-lessons, conferences and assessing student progress. Allyson has led various workshops and institutes focusing on reading and writing workshop for upper elementary and middle school teachers.

Literacy consultants Sarah Buxton and Allyson Nusser will offer methods for increasing rigor into the Reading Workshop classroom. In this workshop, teachers, administrators, coaches, and teachers will gain a strong understanding of the demands of the Common Core Learning Standards.
