Presented
by: Constance Foland
Constance Foland is an educational
consultant specializing in literacy instruction. She has
taught Reading Recovery and English as a Second
Language in several New York City schools, including
Manhattan New School, under the direction of
Shelley Harwayne. She was also a reading specialist in
New York. Constance conducts workshops and
institutes and provides on-site coaching for teachers
across the country. She is the author of A Song for
Jeffrey and Flying High, Pogo! two middle grade
novels published by American Girl Publications. She is
currently working on a book about teaching writing |

by: Sophie Trecker
Sophie Trecker taught for 6 years at PS
116 in Manhattan. Sophie has experience developing
and implementing balanced literacy and the workshop
model of reading and writing. She has mentored
teachers who are new to this model as well as presented
workshops to them. Sophie has experience working
with a variety of children including ELL students and
students with special needs; she co-taught in an
inclusion kindergarten classroom. Sophie has also
worked as a supervisor in the Curriculum and Teaching
department at Teachers College; she worked with
student teachers to develop and implement curriculum
in various grade levels. |

Nonfiction and Informational Writing 8:30-11:30 Items to be addressed will include:
- The connection between nonfiction reading and nonfiction writing
- Creating nonfiction learning centers in the K-2 classroom
- Nonfiction writing and how it connects to the common core standards
- Planning a nonfiction unit of study
- Mini lessons and conferring in a nonfiction unit

Narrative Writing 12:00-3:00 Items to be addressed will include:
- Different types of narrative units aligned with the common core standards
- Teaching students to write high quality narrative stories
- Looking at student examples of narrative writing
- Conferring with students during narrative units
- Planning a unit of narrative writing
|
In both Sessions: Teachers will exit the workshop with an easy-to-follow plan for mini-lessons across a range of units, texts to use to support students, and with trustworthy ideas on managing productive writing workshops. |

Information: |
| Fee:
$125 per person. Register 4 weeks in advance and
pay only $100 per person. No confirmation will be sent. Your cancelled
check or credit card statement will be your receipt. |
Cancellations one week prior to the workshop date, will be refunded less a $15.00 cancellation fee. Later cancellations will receive credit towards an upcoming workshop. Substitutions are allowed at any time.
If workshop is cancelled due to inclement weather, the event will be rescheduled. Refunds will not be granted, but we will issue credit towards a future workshop. |
| Payment is due prior to the workshop. Fee includes seminar
registration, a personalized certificate of attendance, refreshments,
and a resource handbook. On-site registration is available, if space
allows. Please call ahead to check on space availability. |
