Small group instruction is an umbrella term for intervention work. Small group instruction includes both guided reading and strategy groups. Pulling students in like leveled groups to support their reading challenges is essential to moving grades 3-5 readers ahead along the continuum for reading. It is essential to be strategic as we plan for instruction. Using the Readers Workshop Model as a springboard for planning intervention lessons is key in linking whole class learning to small group instruction.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Analyzing how to develop like leveled groups using previously facilitated assessments
  • Using conferring to inform small groups and using small groups to inform conferring
  • Determining what focus for instruction each group requires
  • Delivering instruction that is specific and deliberate
  • Assessing efficacy of the lesson for students through short assessments

How do we invite those students who don't identify as writers into the critical process of writing? Students who struggle with writing often require individualized interventions carefully tailored to their specific areas of weakness. This workshop will present multiple strategies for engaging and supporting students in each stage of the writing process.

As a result of attending this workshop, participants will:

  • Recognize the importance of analyzing students’ strengths and weaknesses to inform conferences and small group instruction that is targeted to students’ specific needs
  • Become familiar with specific graphic organizers and mentor texts that will serve to support student writing across a variety of genres
  • Be made aware of specific writing strategies that will help lift the level of student writing
